I ordered this item for my daughter so that she would have interesting facts to take to school with her and share with the class. The response was overwhelming. She now periodically shared tidbits on the morning announcements for the entire school. I am thinking of getting another to actually give to the teacher for the classroom for Christmas.

Review for The Learning Calendar

My 10-year old daughter really enjoyed her last Learning Calendar, so much that she asked for another one! The only drawback is: her last calendar ended on Dec. 2008 and this new calendar started on Sept. 2008. There is an overlap of 4 months that we don't use. I think it would be better to keep it a Jan. - Jan. calendar. Maybe include a coupon in the back of the calendar to entice people to reorder the next year's.

This is our fourth year getting the Learning Calendar and we love it. My girls look at it each day to see what interesting thing happened in history. I also see them looking ahead to the coming months because they can't wait to see what else has happened in history. It really makes history come alive for them. We did notice that this year the paper is a little thinner than before making the calendar a little more fragile. However, the content is still entirely worth the purchase price.

This was the first time purchasing The Learning Calendar. I like being able to use the calendar right away and enjoy reading the trivia and doing some of the activities with my child. My only suggestion would be to have trivia/history and activities on days like Easter and Christmas pertain to these religious holidays and include other faiths history and activities for their holy days of observance.

She didn't have to wait until January 1 to start using it.

it's a very good learning tool. kids find it interesting and gives them a chance to look up knowledge that they don't know yet. it's a good way to encourage kids learn new things. kids are naturally curious and specially interested in find out what happened before or in the history on their birthdate so that's another bonus for them. each day gives just enough of information to learn or know if they are interested to know more or dig deeper they can also go online to find out more interesting topics too. we enjoy the calendar very much.

It has been great so far. I wish I had it since January so we would have more use out of it. I liked it so much, I bought an additional one for my son's teacher who is in a magnet school, and I use mine to homeschool the other boys. She reads the fact for the day, and incorporates it into the students morning writing lesson. I do wish there were different grade levels of fun facts depending on the age group of the child - like 4-6, 6-10, etc.

Excellent Resource For Teachers & Home School Families
Posted 11/23/2007 by Frank Falcetta

Rating:

We purchased this product for 'enrichment' of our Calvert home school curriculum. We keep an 'Interesting Journal' with the purpose of keeping record of random facts/information that correlates and connects to the curriculum content we are studying each year. This calendar is worth the money, if only for the fact that your child will get small snapshots of information that can later be connected to something they study in school or read in a book, or see on television, or hear in the lyrics of a song! Upon receipt of this product, our first task (at the request of our 10 year old) was to go through and look at the information logged for all of our family dates (bdays, anniversaries, etc.). We had a great time just looking at the pictures and captions for almost 1/2 an hour. To date, our only disappointment is that for Nov. 19, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was ommitted. However, Sadat & Begin's peace talks were certainly crucial to our world, so we had an excellent conversation about that subject. AND some correlations to what impact the Civil War had on America as we know it today. Overall, this is a great resource and certainly meets or exceeds it's own PR.

I love the calendar and the monthly emails that accompany the calendar. There's so much important and fun information each month. I wish I had ordered it sooner for this year, but I have next year's calendar already to go up on Jan. 1st. My 5 kids range in ages from 7-18 and they all read it. I'm bringing it to my homeschool group to let them know about it. It's a product that I will continue to purchase each year. Thanks!

Review for The Learning Calendar
Posted 2/13/2007 by Scott Sofferman

Rating:

The Learning Calendar is a great piece of work. History is fascinating and this product makes it fun to learn. I would like to see more scientific data, biology, interesting chemical facts etc covered. When the year is over, perhaps it would be a good idea to be able cut the day cards into study cards. It's hard because on the other side there are the following month's facts. Otherwise, I love the product. Keep up the good work. A Happy Customer.

Yeah, I'm not that impressed with the calendar. It got great reviews which is why I ordered it but so far it is more history than science. It's random facts that are interesting but not lasting. I home school and my girls love science but this doesn't add to our curriculum. We don't remember to look at it every day. (Note from Fat Brain Toys: August through December 2009 months are a recap of the previous 2009 theme of Innovations, Inventions, and Ideas, in case you missed the 2009 calendar. This is a great aditional resource for teachers of any type. As homeschoolers, we like to use the entries as a starting point for some of our activities. The entries on the calendar are interesting and can easily be used as a "Fact for the Day", an addition to a particular theme study, or fun for trivia enthusiasts. It's money well spent. I also keep copies from previous years for future use.

Small Print
Posted 8/22/2008 by Candace Galen

Rating:

This calendar is crowded with very small print (I would think the font size is about 5-8). That combined with the specialized information makes it a mediocre choice for kids in the lower grades (below fourth grade). I would not recommend this calendar for young children.

I homeschool 2 boys age 7 & 10. We haven't had the calender very long, but it seems to be working for us. As they are eating breakfast we discuss what the calender says for that day. The basketball entry prompted lots of interest and we looked up more information. Some of the other entries weren't as interesting to my boys at their ages. Perhaps if you decide to expand you could do calenders that are more focused toward specific interests or ages.

The Smartest Calendar Ever Made!
Posted 2/18/2008 by Jennifer Rodriguez

Rating:

Setting: Home

Years ago I had considered homeschooling my children and purchased this calendar. My children and I loved to read the daily history. We even did the research together on the daily topics. When we moved, we moved to a better school district so I have allowed my children to attend school. We came across the old calendar the other day and my daughter (now 10 & a straight A student) asked me "Whatever happened to the calendar company that made this calendar?" She had recalled the fun we used to have together while researching the daily topics. We were both excited to see after searching the web that it was still in production and we had to purchase it! My younger daughter (now 7) is looking forward to participating in our daily learning. Each morning they read the "day in history..." and talk about it during breakfast. When they come home from school they quickly finish their homework and look-up the topic on the computer before they go to sleep. They have so much fun I don't think they realize that they are learning! THANK YOU for continuing to produce this product! It is a great learning tool for children and a great conversation starter for families!

Rating:

Setting: Homeschool

We love our Learning Calendar. In order for everyone to get a chance to read it, we found the best place to hang it is in the bathroom next to the toilet. All it takes is 1 minute to read the daily detail. You'd be amazed to hear some tidbit of information come up in future conversations. Also, little notes about who was born when (like Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1841) help put history in context as my children learn about other events happening during that time period.

My 8 year old daughter wanted to buy a calander. We looked at ALOT of them. This one however was the first she'd looked at and it stuck with her. Because of the holidays and bad weather it took a while to be delivered. But boy when it did she lit up. She reads it everyday and shares what she has learned at the dinner table every night. A+ from us!

I can guarantee you we will purchase it until she is through high school, so another 18 years guaranteed if not more! I hope you continue to put it out!

The learning calendar gives the yearly calendar I need for every day. It gives me information I enjoy learning about. So many things happen every day and in our busy lives we go on not paying attention on whats going on around us. Also I sometimes surprise my co workers with the items I learn each day. I had a co-worker ask me "ok james, what happened today?". I love the calendar. Enough said.

I have gotten this calendar every year since 2003, and still love the daily events listed. I had been looking for a calendar for work and stumbled onto this one. I teach middle school and find it great for work. There are those occasions when you need an extra "bit" to fill in those last few minutes of class and this is great because there is something for every day. The topics are varied enough that there is something for everyone. AND... if your evaluator happens to be in the room it is a cross-curriculum integration tool! Even if I didn't use it at work, it provides a nice bit of trivia to be able to spout out most any day.

The trivia and information provided almost daily, along with the experiments provide learning and fun for kids and adults alike. As an educator and mother of girls, Science Technology Engineering and Math are all areas that we want to promote and nurture early on. This calendar provides high quality tools and information to support STEM learning early on. I hope Fat Brain will continue to produce this calendar, and possibly to add other content-area versions each year.
