I bought this for my 4 year old to help her learn to read and spell. She likes to fill in the letters and is working with Daddy to spell things that arent on the cards. She asks to get it out and use it, and we use it about 2-3 times a week. I think it was a very good purchase, and i hope to use it a lot more, and for little brother in the future.

Purchased item for my daughter as she loves puzzles, is familiar with her letters and is learning to spell. This is another high quality product from the Melissa and Doug company. My daughter loves it. The words are common, every day beginner words. The images are attractive. The product is solid and high quality. Would recommend this product to my friends.

my 8 year old is fascinated with "cracking the code;" he is homeschooled and learning to read at his own pace. the "see and spell" gives him practice manipulating letters, matching words to pictures, and playing around with sounds and how they translate into letters.

Loved the product- agree with other customers that it would be a much greater package if it included a cover. My son loves the letters and hope it will not only help review the letters but maybe work on phonics and spelling overall.

I have twin daughters that are very busy! They are beginning to learn letters and word association. This Puzzle is fabulous!! Because of the pictures, they are becoming more familiar with sight words and improving their letter recognition. After just 2 times of using it that are picking out the letter puzzle pieces telling me what letters they are finding. The best part for me is there are just enough puzzle pieces for them to share and keep them both entertained at the same time!

See & Spell - great learning tool
Posted 11/20/2008 by K. Mosc

Rating:

Setting: Home

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is b/c it does not have a cover to contain all the pieces. Other than that, my 2 year old loves it. I pick out the letters that correspond to the board we are working on and we say the letter as she places them in the correct spot - we then review the picture and word. It is a great letter and word learning tool.

My children have really enjoyed this new product. The only suggestion that I have is that, like some other Melissa and Doug products, there be a plastic cover to slide over the top of the wooden box in order to keep the small letters from falling out everywhere.

great learning toy! I bought it for my 2-yr old and she loves it. The only negative side is that the name plates are hard for her to get out of the box. There's no enough room around them for her fingers so we end up flipping it over and dumping everything out. Also a cover for the box would help with keeping the letters together.

See and Spell a hit for 3 and 5 year old!
Posted 9/12/2008 by Melanie Broome

Rating:

Setting: Home

I bought this See and Spell for my 3.5 yr son and 5.5 yr old daughter. My daughter went about it very factually, and methodically and gave a big Wahoo! when she finished all 8 boards. She promptly flipped them all over and started on the other sides. A big Wahoo! again from her when she finished those, and she went to get her dad to show him her accomplishment! I found that flipping a few of the letters upside down or backwards helped get her thinking more.. She kept mixing up her b and d and h and n, so this may help her solidify her letters. Maybe it will help her get her "e's" facing the correct way at school! Definitely a way to make letters "REAL". My son was a hoot to watch - he whooped and hollered as he finished EVERY board! He was TOTALLY excited to play the game. I had to arrange the letters all right side up on the floor for him before he started. Only bad thing, is there is no cover to the wooden box and even though I have taken care to store the game up high when not in use, I have already found 2 letters floating around.. Wish it had any kind of cover! The kids have each asked to play with this twice in 2 weeks.. each play time lasts about 45 minutes.. high quality construction, excellent feel.

Great for learning lower case letters and beginning spelling
Posted 8/13/2008 by Katherine Johnson

Rating:

I bought this for my daughter's 3rd birthday and it was a great choice. She frequently asks to play her "letter game" and it holds her interest enough to go through all the words in one sitting. I like that the letters are different colors, so for a younger child, like my daughter, I can tell her what color the letter is that she is looking for, to limit her choices. There is at least one wooden letter for each of the 26 letters of the alphabet, however, not all letters are used in the puzzles. So in order for your child to learn those letters you will have to make up your own words. That is my biggest negative of this product. I also wish that there was a cover for the box, to keep all of the contents inside without spilling when a child carries it, or to take it in the car.

Love this word puzzle.
Posted 3/23/2009

Rating:

I purchased this for my 4 year old niece for Christmas. She loves it and likes learning how the letters go together to spell the words. I'm also buying this for my 3 year old son. He's a little young for it, but he knows his letters and likes puzzles, so I think he'll enjoy playing with it. And hey, if he starts to pick up the concept of putting letters together to make sounds and words it's an added bonus.
The only negative is the limited number of words to spell - there should be an expansion pack!

M&D See and Spell Set
Posted 10/6/2009 by Warren L Thompson III

Rating:

Our two year old is starting to get into letters and words so we wanted to try this out. This is a perfect toy to combine her ability to recognize letters and then show her how they form words on the boards. The wooden letters are on the small side so we have to watch and make sure she doesn't try to eat them, and my only wish is that the box had a lid to contain the letters. But really, she loves the pictures on the boards and the quality is like any other M&D toy.

I was looking for education products for my daughter and found Melissa and Doug's See & Spell. My daughter is two years old and she loves it! Because of the size of the letters, I do supervise her just in case she decides to try and eat one. Other than that it is a perfect fit for her. She loves fitting the letters into the word puzzle. Good But Room For Improvement
Posted 6/10/2009 by Susan G

Rating:

We own a lot of Melissa and Doug toys and have always been happy with them but this one has some room for improvement. There are a lot of letters but the choice of letters seems odd. We have 6 C's but only 1 M, N, and L (there are other letters like p & q that there are only 1 of, but you can always flip around a b or d for words like puppy). We can't spell mom -nevermind mommy. Some of the words for the tiles seem a bit odd. They are not my favorite for a beginning speller and reader (cow, duck, sock, cake, fish, car, bird, bus, cat, dog, tree, frog, hen, etc). The quality is great. I would buy it again, but wish I could get more of the letters we needed.

I put the easel together in about 30 minutes, (I made some mistakes due to NOT reading the directions thoroughly). I like that the easel is height adjustable and that 2 can play at the same time. We gave the easel and Gavin loves it. He has enjoyed the easel for several days in a row now and his little brother (18 months) is a fan too! They are making "art projects" galore for all of us to admire and enjoy. We take it outside too for long periods of good fun. I would recommend the easel for all.

great idea from Melissa and Doug

Rating:

The See & Spell puzzle is quite beautifully done and the idea is to get kids to recognize letters and associate them with words and with objects. I like the idea of the movable alphabet, as it's straight out of the Montessori philosophy of making the letters tangible and not just abstract for kids. I've bought two of them as gifts and one for my son who is turning 3. He is just learning to distinguish a few letters and this will help him on his way.

I bought this for my son who is 21 months. I know it was meant for someone older, but I just knew it would fit my needs. He is starting to learn the alphabet. This toy allows him to "feel" the alphabet, "see" the alphabet and then associate the letters with an object. He isn't really spelling anything yet, but he recognizing that the object BUS looks like "bus". Hope this makes sense. Anyways, we play it when he needs a little one on one time or the letters would be everywhere. I keep them in a zip lock baggie. My only complaint is that i wish the wooden cards had more variety of words that used most of the letters of the alphabet. But too much could be overwhelming for a little one. I love it.

My 3.5 yo daughter loves the See & Spell. She lined up all the puzzle boards on the floor and went down the row spelling each of the items. She didn't get every one of them right, but she had fun learning and that's all that matters. Highly recommend!

Beautifully crafted. Made in the USA. Colorful and fun! Provides practice with lower case letters, eye-hand coordination, and early word recognition. I gave this to my grandson for his 4th. birthday, and he took to it readily. In addition, I think it would make an excellent center activity at his pre-school this year.

Great educational toy--my son doesn't even realize he's learning & thinks it's just a game! He's very interested in how to spell things right now & he's been working on his lower case letters, so this fit the bill for us. At first I wished there were more things to spell but we've been spelling things without them and he still loves it. The only improvement would be a box with a lid over the whole thing.

My son really likes the See & Spell- he is just over two years old, but is very gifted. I had seen reviews from parents of other two-year-olds who liked the set, so I bought it even though it is recommended for 4 and up. The only things that I find a little disappointing are the selection of letters- there were only one of several letters, and only 2 of some common letters like S and N. The "i" and "j" look a bit strange, with enlarged dots attached to the lines, too. If I worked at Melissa & Doug, I might have included a blank template to spell out other words, and featured a sliding lid, like the one on their stringing bead set.

This is a good and fun product for kids learning how to spell & read. The words are simple and perfect for those just starting out. The drawback is that the letters are already carved into the wood so the child only has to match up the pieces to the carved out letter. I recommend having the letters on blocks or squares so the child actually has to spell the word rather than put a puzzle together.

I bought this item for my 6 year old daughter whom is developmentally disabled. This was perfect timing as she is just beginning to learn sight words in school. This was also great in working on her fine motor skills as she is required to manipulate the letter pieces in the correct position on the board. She has since played with this for hours at a time. The pieces are very durable, and you can wipe them clean with a wet wipe if needed. The box that stores the boards and letter pieces comes in handy, however I would have liked to see a lid of some sort that keeps them all in.

My 4 yr old really enjoys the See and Spell. Great reinforcement of letter recognition and introduction to spelling/reading words. The bonus is that she just thinks it's fun, she has no idea she is learning while she is playing.
The only drawback is that the box does not come with a top to contain all the letters.

Good But Not Perfect
Posted 1/30/2008 by Christine Lyons

Rating:

I have a 2.5 year old who seems to like the puzzle aspect of this a lot, but it does confuse her for a couple of reasons: 1) Letters are lower case and block-style, so the b, p, q, and d are too similar for her. 2) There are more letters than there are places to put them. I was glad to see that every letter of the alphabet is included (makes it easier to play ABC games with them), but not every letter of the alphabet is used, and my daughter doesn't understand why we don't use the x, q, z, etc. Even other more common letters are not used, but c shows up in half of the words.
And a small gripe I have with many M&D products -- they give you a really nice wooden box to put all of the pieces in, but there's no lid or any way to keep them all together. But that's not enough to stop me from buying their otherwise high quality products!

This is a great toy! It's fun and educational. My 4 year old daughter really likes it. The only problem is the packaging. You'd think since it came in a nice wooden box there would be some kind of cover on it to keep all the pieces inside. Well, it does not. You have to put the whole thing inside a very large ziploc to keep it all together. Great toy but not really thought all the way through.

We love the See & Spell Puzzle! Both my children (ages 2 and 5 1/2) played independently and cooperatively with this simple puzzle. There are enough wooden letters to complete any combination of the spelling boards without having to undo any previous work. The letters are only painted on the top side so smaller children have no trouble orienting the letters. I like that the letters are lower case as sometimes manipulatives neglect them resulting in less exposure for our pre-readers. I like the choice of words as some use more advanced phonic sounds and vowel combinations. It is well made in the tradition of Melissa and Doug and I expect it to hold up well under use. The only thing I think would make it better would be more spelling boards. I think my kids would love to "keep going" even after they have filled in all the boards.

The product is well made but did not hold my son's interest for more than a few play occasions. The way the letters are stored all jumbled up in one section of the box makes it hard for little ones to pick out the ones they need. Even if you spread them out on the floor, they're turned every which way and some upside down, so unless you want to turn every piece the right way to make it easier for your child to recognize, I'd say this is for older kids, 4 and up (which is what it says on the box). But at that age, I'm not sure how much fun it'll be to put letters into the letter shapes either.
