Just add sunshine and water and see what develops! Use natural or man-made objects to make beautiful and unique prints.
Use your SunArt Paper Kit outdoors on a sunny or an overcast day or even in a sunny window. All kits come with 15 sheets of SunArt Paper.
Cyanotypes are photographs sometimes known as blueprints, sunprints or sunlight prints. a photogram is a photographic image made without the use of a camera by placing objects on light-sensitized paper. Also called shadow prints or "Rayograph", after the artist Man Ray. Cyanotype paper is a light-sensitive coated paper.
Step 1
Select item(s) such as leaves, flowers or objects found around the house. Arrange a composition that will fit the size of the paper. You can even use negatives but it can take up to 2 hours for exposure.
Step 2
Assemble in this order:
Surface or cardboard for the bottom
SunArt Paper - blue side up (keep away from direct sunlight)
Chosen item(s)
Acrylic sheet which holds items in place
(Peel protective coating from acrylic sheet before use)
Step 3
Expose to the sunlight until SunArt Paper turns a very light blue. Approximately 1-5 minutes, depending on sunlight. Stay away from shadows.
Step 4
Once the SunArt Paper has turned a very light blue, carefully slide the paper out from backing board and your objects. Quickly rinse the SunArt Paper with water for about one minute. The image will turn lighter during this process. To obtain darker, more intense blue tones, simply add a few drops of lemon juice to a tray of water. Use the tray to rinse your exposed SunArt Paper.
Step 5
Place the rinsed SunArt Paper on a flat surface or paper towels to dry. See your beautiful solar photograph darken to a richer blue as the SunArt Paper dries. To flatten, simply place the completely dried sheet under a book for 1-2 days. Do not try to flatten your print before it is completly dry.
Use only as directed. Adult supervision is recommended.

Organize first for younger kids

I did this project with a 4 year old boy and 8 year old girl. In order to gain the 4 year old's interest, I had to gather materials for him to use beforehand. He couldn't grasp the concept of shadows in the beginning. Once I laid the materials out for him, he enjoyed designing his project. He especially liked using Melissa & Doug Patterns Magnets to create a picture on the paper. The back of the magnet board is a good surface to work on the paper to carry outside. Large cutting boards also work well. For the 8 year old, I first sent her outside to gather her own materials and this really engaged her. The product works within a minute of being out in the sun. Surprisingly, both kids lost interest in this phase. After a few minutes, the papers were almost white around the objects and we brought them inside. We used a rimmed cookie tray with water and lemon juice. The colors change instantly and the kids loved this part. After rinsing for a few minutes, we dried them on paper towels. The end result is pretty cool. The darkest blue we achieved was kind of a royal blue. We decided to hang them up in the window which looks cool when the sun shines through. We never used the vinyl over the objects so I can't say if this has an effect on the project. It was a little windy but the movement of the objects just slightly left a cool shadow effect.
Stomp Rocket

At first I was skeptical on how it would work, but when my nephew stomped on the air cushion and that rocket went soaring it was awesome. To see the excitement on my nephews face can not be described.
I did notice that the air cushion is getting very scratched, is there a replacement I can order when/if it gets a hole in it and doesn't work anymore?
I haven't seen the sunprint paper kit in action yet, but if it is anything like the stomp rocket I am sure we will all be very satisfied.
Thank you,

Got this for a recent camping trip. It was great for all ages. The younger kids enjoyed simply putting the objects on the paper, while the older kids took time to create pictures The kids enjoyed collecting items and it was a great way to teach them about the things they were finding. A great way to look at objects in a different way.

The product was just what I expected. I remember using something like this as a kid over 30 years ago and it worked just the same. I used it for teaching light and photography principals.
